A Love Song for a Whale (video)

As Kathryn Roberts explains in this video, she has a thing for whales and always wanted to sing a song about one. But she did not want to sing a traditional whaling song, in which the subject is generally the dangers or hardships of hunting them.

I will leave the rest of the backstory to her, as she delivers it charmingly. Suffice it to say it is a terrific song, and I enthusiastically submit it as my entry for Valentine's Day. After all, we can all feel like lonely whales every now and then --and that we just can't seem to get our message across.

Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman perform "52 hz" at EFEx from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.

I heard this song months ago, at the English Folk Expo, in which I shot performances by so many impressive musicians that I am still wading through the edits. Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman were just one of the grand musical surprises I encountered. Lakeman adds a perfect guitar accompaniment to Roberts' singing and keyboard playing, and the repertoire encompasses both traditional and original songs. Indeed, Roberts had a sure-to-be-a-hit song about motherhood (but I'm holding that one until May).

The English Folk Expo (EFEx) is produced in partnership with The Met's Homegrown Festival, in Bury, Manchester.
